Ellie doubled over with pain as Blunt swung a hooked fist into her stomach.

She collapsed to the ground and the big man took a step back and then lashed out with his booted foot, the blow crashing into the girl’s chest.

She whined pitifully as he kicked her again, this time catching her thigh, hitting a nerve and causing a huge pain to swell down her leg. She tried to curl herself into a ball, offering as little a target as possible, but it did her no good. Blunt picked her bodily off the ground and threw her onto a nearby plastic bin, its contents scattering and clanging as she sprawled across its hard surface.

Fletcher, standing in the mouth of the alleyway, viewed the scene dispassionately. His only thought was that he wished Blunt wouldn’t make so much out of it. He was being too loud. Why didn’t he just kill the girl and they could be on their way? He shook his head as Blunt continued with his work.

He didn’t hear the man behind him until it was too late. The scuff of a shoe sent him spinning round and he caught sight of a short, broad figure holding something in its hand. Then all thought disintegrated as his body was thrown to the floor and he jerked like a gaffed fish as electricity surged through his body. His eyes eventually closed as unconsciousness overtook him.

Parker eyed the unconscious man dispassionately and switched off the Taser. He stepped towards the far end of the alley.

Blunt turned from the huddled form of the young girl at the noise and surveyed the shadows carefully.

‘Fletcher, what the fuck are you doing?’

Parker appeared from the darkness, pepper spray in one hand and his extendable baton in the other.

‘Police,’ he said. ‘Step away from the girl and lie on the floor face down. Right now!’

Blunt stared. Then incredibly his lips curled into a smile, totally without fear.

‘So you were here too, eh? Can’t say I’m that surprised.’ He stared at Parker. ‘Well, well, well,’ he said.

Parker looked into Blunt’s eyes and saw no fear, only a deep nothingness. This man was not just a criminal. There was an insanity in those eyes that bespoke a mind which did not follow normal rules. Parker had seen eyes like those enough times to know that this man was as dangerous as a snake. He could not be given an inch.

He turned his gaze towards the girl who stared back at him, petrified.

‘It’s all right,’ he told her. ‘You’re safe now. Can you walk?’

Ellie stood and tried to balance herself on shaking legs. She ached where Blunt had kicked her, but feeling was starting to return to the dead leg.

‘I’m all right,’ she said.

Parker nodded, his eyes darting back to the big man who still stood grinning.

‘Come and stand by me, then,’ said the DI. She started to move but Blunt suddenly leapt behind her, one massive arm snaking around her already bruised neck, his other hand delving into his pocket and pulling out a pistol.
